Children used as leverage
Children should never carry the burden of an adult legal war
Children can be harmed when adults use them as messengers, witnesses, leverage, surveillance, punishment, or proof of loyalty during litigation. Repeated interviews, pressure to choose sides, interference with safe relationships, public exposure, or strategic use of a child’s words can deepen trauma. Genuine safety disclosures must still be heard and investigated without dismissing them as manipulation.
What failure can look like
- A child asked to deliver hostile messages, gather information, monitor another household, or report adult conversations
- Pressure to reject, defend, accuse, or choose between loved ones as proof of loyalty
- Repeated litigation events, interviews, evaluations, or public disclosures centered on the child without a clear safety or evidentiary need
Protect the record
Record adult conduct, dates, exact statements, resulting filings or orders, and observable effects without coaching or repeatedly questioning the child. Preserve original communications and professional records, protect the child’s identity, and seek trauma-informed legal and clinical guidance focused on safety and reduced conflict.
